Can Molokai Live with Wind Turbine Noise?

According to the information in Addressing Wind Turbine Noise, sound levels from Pattern/Bio-Logical Capital’s proposed wind farm on the West End would be disrupting and potentially dangerous to ALL residents and visitors. Forget about sunsets at the beach!

If you don’t have time to read the entire document, some good information begins on page 8. The 3MW wind turbines proposed for Molokai and Lanai would probably emit about 105 decibels, falling to 50 db at about 1/2 mile. Lower frequencies travel further (page 15). If downwind (On Molokai the trades would make many people downwind), the noise can be heard for 3 miles or more (page 16).

At 60 db, 90% of people will have sleep interrupted most nights. At 45 db, 10% of people will be awakened most nights.

Many States have regulations on noise levels near homes. Does anyone know about Hawaii noise regs?

WHAT ABOUT THE VIBRATION THAT IS TRANSFERRED INTO THE GROUND THAT EFFECTS THINGS WE DON’T KNOW ABOUT ? Mechanical Noise from the moving parts of turbines -vibrates the ground and water. What effect does this have on all living things ? Does anyone know for sure ?

  2. This is the link to Hawaii Noise Code.

We should also look into an environmental law firm that would be willing to take the case. The situation now is beyond a reasonable conversation.
A more drastic measure would be to start the process of placing Molokai on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The following link shows USA protected sites (scroll down the list).

    Hawaii has two:

First an application must be submitted for the Tentative List with explanations and reasons of why the site should be protected. We will need scientists that can provide a well informed opinion. If there are any on Molokai they should be contacted, build up the documentation and go on from there.
